Confidentiality Policy
The core element of the work undertaken in Counselling is the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client. Developing trust in this relationship is essential for the process, however there are a couple of important limitations to confidentiality in Counselling and Psychotherapy that I am legally and ethically obligated to report. (Mandatory Reporting)
These include the following:
If I believe you are going to cause serious harm to yourself or another /others. In such circumstances I will endeavour to discuss same with you before a breach of confidentiality.
If I am informed of unreported child sex abuse where the abuser is still alive, regardless of when the abuse occurred. In such circumstances we would discuss the best way to proceed in reporting same.
Regular supervision ensures the quality and effectiveness of my work is maintained and supported.
No personal details of clients are revealed to my supervisor.
Personal Privacy Statement and GDPR
The General Data Protection Regulation came into effect in 2018 and relates to personal data about each client attending my practice. Personal Data collected includes the following information given by each client at the beginning of the counselling sessions:
Name, Address, Contact phone numbers, Date of birth, Next of Kin, History & Medical details / GP details.
When you share your personal data with me, it is for the purpose of me working effectively with you. I have a legitimate interest in collecting this information so I can work effectively and in line with guidelines of The Association of Professional Counsellors & Psychotherapists in Ireland.
Your contact details will be stored to enable me to contact you regarding any changes or cancellations to appointment times.
All my digital devices are used solely for my practice and are password protected.
Along with your personal data, I may take brief notes on our counselling sessions. These are to aid my memory and to reflect on the therapy process, and themes recurring in the process. I use Bacpac, a secure client management software to store any notes and personal data.
Please note that beyond the strict measures taken to protect my clients’ privacy I accept no responsibility for any breaches of confidentiality due to unsolicited contact made via any means of electronic communication.
